Active ChiroCare E-Zine - Vol. I, 8





It is that time of year again when we are all getting ready for the Holidays. Now is the time to prepare your body for the winter season; and here are some tips to keep in mind as you enjoy this time of year.


Many families move furniture around as they decorate and prepare for family or company gatherings.  As you do, make sure that you bend your knees and use your legs to lift and move heavy things.  Arch your back and make a real effort to maintain good posture.  Nothing can ruin the holidays quicker than an injury that could have been prevented.


 If you are hanging lights on your roof this holiday, the first-thing I recommend is that you hire someone else to do it for you!  If you insist on doing it yourself, make sure to employ every possible precaution.  Wear non-slip shoes, use a well-balanced, sturdy and stable ladder, and of course, take advantage of any safety equipment you have available.  Remember Murphy's Law.  If it can go wrong this time of year it probably will.  Plan to be safe.


 As you work in the yard remember that there will be lots of reaching, stretching and twisting that might not be normal everyday motion for you. As you rake the leaves in your yard, make sure to alternate your strokes from side to side and work your back and body evenly.  Remember to stretch before yard work to protect your back from unnecessary twists and strains or sprains.


 If you are planning to take a ski vacation this year start preparing physically now by conditioning and stretching.  This will help you protect your joints and tendons when under an unusually hard strain.


 One of the greatest gifts we can give to another is the gift of health.  Remember your family, friends and co-workers during this season of good cheer.  An offer to help them get and then stay healthy with chiropractic care could be the best gift they receive.  And, it does not cost anything at all…please let us know who we can help this year and in the years ahead.

This last weekend, I was in Chicago to do some training for BStrong4Life inside the Olympus Executive Fitness Center inside the Hotel Arista.  This is one of the newest BStrong4Life locations!  
 Here are some pictures I took while there that show Dr. Perry Camissa (Doctor at BStrong4Life - Lisle) and John Jaquish (one of the developers of the BS4L technology) instructing how to properly use the equipment.  I'll post the link to the videos I took while there here on the Active ChiroCare Facebook page.  

The videos show what the BS4L Center looks like, as well as some videos of John doing his BStrong4Lifeworkout!  Oh yeah, and when you hear the people cheering John on when he's doing his leg press by saying, "Hit three!  Hit three!" - that's 3, as in 3,000 pounds of force!

Thanksgiving

This week is Thanksgiving week.  It's a time to get together again with family and friends to celebrate and remember what we're thankful for.  
You may have heard this before, but part of living life to its fullest is realizing the little things in each day that you are grateful for.  What are you grateful for?  
For me, I'm grateful for my family that has helped me through many stages of life....enabling me to have a quality education growing up, supporting me with their time, love and money while going through chiropractic school, as well as making my dream of opening up a chiropractic and massage therapy office become a reality.
I couldn't have done it without them.
What is something or who is someone that you couldn't have done without that made it possible for you to be where you are today, or enabled you to be WHO you are today?

Doctors suggest osteoporosis can affect young people with poor diet


Experts say that osteoporosis no longer exclusively affects the elderly, and that poor diet and lack of exercise are putting many younger people at risk for the condition.

Junk food and sedentary lifestyles are putting young people of both genders at an increased risk for developing osteoporosis. Some of the factors that increase this risk are prolonged hormonal imbalance, excessive use of medicines like steroids, lack of vitamin D, small bone frame, smoking and consumption of alcohol and caffeine.

"Women who take birth control pills during their reproductive years may reduce their risk of osteoporosis developing later in life, probably because of the estrogen that many oral contraceptives contain. Estrogen replacement therapy helps protect women against bone loss," said Dinesh Kansal, obstetrician and gynecologist at Dr B.L. Kapur Memorial Hospital.

Regular exercise and adequate calcium intake in the form of dairy products and green, leafy vegetables may help in preventing the disease, according to Ravi Mohan Bagga, a senior orthopedic consultant at the hospital.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, 44 million Americans are at elevated risk for bone fracture.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals
We've devoted the last couple E-Zines to setting goals. Why? Because ALL of us have them, but I think we can all agree that it's sometimes tough to accomplish them because we don't understand how to get from here to -----> there!


In the last couple additions, we've been going through how to make specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely (e.g., SMART) goals - which is our process with all our clients at Active ChiroCare to make sure they get maximum results from their care!


This E-Zine, we're going to talk about about what we can expect for realistic and timely results at Active ChiroCare when it comes to real-life goals.


I would say that for the majority of people seeking relief care (either from headaches, back pain, sciatica, etc.), most people will experience a decrease in pain of some kind anywhere within 1-4 weeks. Everybody is unique in their result, but this is usually what we can expect.


If a person decides they want to rebuild their spine so that it can be as fortified and as stable as much as possible, then we can visibly SEE results in as short a time as 12 weeks (whether through improved posture, dramatic improvements through BStrong4Life in functional strength, etc.). Talk about realistic and time-tested results!

The Greatest Goal and Purpose of Life

Usher-SUCCESSWhenever I am asked what I believe the goal and purpose of life is, my answer is the same, and it’s the theme of our October Issue of SUCCESS.
Of all the great pursuits in life, to me this is the most important. Every virtue, treasure and reward in life is obtained only through this quest. What is it? It is living your potential.
Robert Louis Stevenson said it more than a hundred years ago: “To become what we are capable of becoming is the only end in life.”
But what is potential? Webster’s dictionary defines potential as possible (as opposed to what’s currently actual) capable of being or becoming or a latent excellence or ability that may or may not be developed. So potential then is what you can become. It is the best possible version of yourself.
The first challenge, I believe, to living our potential—is realizing the greatness that is dormant inside of each of us.
Thomas Edison said, “If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves.”
Dale Carnegie also taught, “We all have possibilities we don’t know about. We can do things we don’t even dream we can do.”
Why don’t we then? I think what stops most of us from tapping our inner genius; the hero or heroine inside each of us is fear. We are actually afraid of our greater potential.
19th century philosopher Soren Kierkegaard said it this way, “There is nothing of which every man is so afraid as getting to know how enormously much he is capable of doing and becoming.”
I know I am constantly challenged by the philosophy espoused by Marianne Williamson when she says, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of our highest potential that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Nelson Mandela echoes this when he says, “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
It is said that the greatest waste in the world is the difference between what we are and what we are capable of becoming.
But denying your potential isn’t just sad, it’s unhealthy. In fact, psychologists tell us nothing creates internal stress and trauma more than when what you are doing on the outside (your actions and behaviors) is incongruent with your potential on the inside.
Abraham Maslow warns, “If you plan on being anything less than you are capable of being, you will probably be unhappy all the days of your life.”
So where to you start? You start by realizing your greatness, understanding the unfathomable strength, courage and capability that has been gifted to you, but has yet to have been fully unwrapped.
Anne Frank wrote, “Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!”
Pope John the 13th pointed the way when he said, “Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.”
And finally we are prodded by the encouraging words from the late great Jim Rohn when he says, “The big challenge of life is to become all that you have the possibility of becoming. You cannot believe what it does to the human spirit to maximize your human potential and stretch yourself to the limit.”

Active ChiroCare E-Zine



S.M.A.R.T. Goals 
In the last E-Zine, I told you that Active ChiroCare uses the S.M.A.R.T. process when it comes to goal setting. SMART goals help us get from, "This is what I want" to actually achieving your goal. In this week's E-Zine, I'll start with how we're SPECIFIC in our goals with our patients. 
A person's body can wear out faster than it should because it doesn't have the strength and integrity to withstand gravity.  This instability can also lead to pain (neck, back, shoulder, knee, foot, etc.).  This means your body can function and be at its best!  This is why we take x-rays on every one of our patients.  This gives us a blueprint specific to YOUR spine.  
When I study a person's "blueprint", I can quantify and determine exactly how unstable and out of alignment a person's spine is.  For example, a person should not have forward head posture.  Forward head posture is many times a cause of headaches, neck pain and numbness/tingling in the hands.  Ideal head posture means that your ears should be over your shoulders.  If it's not, we can determine SPECIFICALLY how unstable your neck is.  

Look at the examples below.  
BLACK LINE = Normal, healthy position for the spine.  
RED LINE = Where the spine actually is.  
 
From the side, you can see in the x-ray the person's neck has straightened
out and even gone the wrong way.


 
On this normal x-ray, you can see that the RED and BLACK lines are nearly on top of each other.  This means that the spine is where it should be.

Reality.  Abnormal position of your spine can cause pain. However, the absence of pain does NOT mean that your spine could still be unstable.  That would just mean that you don't have pain yet.  
Your Reality.  What's keeping you from knowing if your body is as strong as it should be?  Here's the challenge:  Make your body as strong as possible so that you can continue running, playing with your (grand)children, and doing the things you love until the day you die!

I am so PUMPED to share with you Linda's patient testimonial this week!  
 Linda wanted to start doing BStrong4Life because of her history of osteoporosis and osteopenia.  She had been taking Boniva (prescription medication to help with bone loss), but she didn't want to have to depend upon medication for the rest of her life .
